14.

Jimmy Porter turned up the next forenoon with Will Carson, who bore not the slightest family resemblance to his tycoon brother, and who seemed not even mildly moved by the murder.

“Ben,” he said matter-of-factly, “had it coming to him. Pa used to say so when he was a kid. He stole all Pa’s money and run away with it. That’s how he begun. Ma wouldn’t let us do anything about it. Sure, he had it coming to him. I told him so back last January that he’d go too far one of these days. That was when he come to me and asked me to pump Mr. Porter here about some people named Howes. Well, like I told him, maybe he’d make millions out of his deal, as he said, but if there was that much money lying around Cape Cod, some Cape Codder’d have picked it up long before this.”

“Deal, huh? S’pose you tell us the works,” Asey suggested.

There wasn’t, Carson said, much to tell. Ben made a date to have lunch with him, the first time he’d ever taken any notice of him in ten years.

“He wanted to know if I come to the Cape, ever. I said once in a while with Mr. Porter, because I liked to fish and so did he. Ben said I could do some business for him, and he’d pay me. He said it meant millions if some one went about it the right way. I told him no. That’s all there was to it. Say, Mr. Porter, won’t we miss the tides? I—”

“Ever hear of anyone named James Glotz?” Asey asked.

“Glotz? I knew a Sam Glotz from Omaha. Would he be the same?”

“°Fraid,” Asey said, “he wouldn’t do.”

Carson nodded and wandered off toward Jimmy’s car.

“Awful upset by all this,” Asey commented ironically.

“The reporters tried to get at him,” Jimmy said. “That was a circus. From what he’s told me from time to time about his illustrious brother, I’d say that it was pure restraint that Will wasn’t hopping up and down, yelling for joy at Ben’s untimely demise. He wanted me to ask you to let the murderer get off, if you found him. I promised I’d do what I could.”

“That’s real nice,” Asey said with a grin. “I’ll take it into consideration if I ever get to find the feller, which don’t seem so very likely right now.”

“Learn anything from the New York end?” Jimmy wanted to know.

“Markham phoned Bob. No papers in his house or at his office, but a nice pile of ashes in the office fireplace seemed to show he’d cleaned the place out himself. That’s all, an’ it ain’t much. Oh, they found out a lot of odds an’ ends, but it don’t ‘pear to me that this was the work of any Follies girl. B’sides, she’s got a Russian prince now. Keep this feller handy, will you, Jimmy? Try to make him work up some interest.”

“The only interest he can work up is over fish,” Jimmy said, “but I’ll do my best.
